Abstract
Purpose : This study was to evaluate the change in visual acuity when contrast of vision chart is decreased using a contrast chart, and to confirm the correlation between the correction method and the gaze distance.

Methods : There were 24 people (13 males and 11 females, mean age of 24.08¡¾1.55) who had normal visual function without any eye disease. Binoptometer¢ç 4P (OCULUS, Wetzlar, Germany) was used to measure binocular vision acuity (VA, logMAR) in five contrast conditions: 100, 40, 20, 10, and 5% under far and near distance. Each participant wore glasses or contact lenses as correction methods, and VA was measured.

Results : VA was reduced with decrease in contrast sensitivity for far and near VA significantly ( <0.010). There was a greater decrease in far VA than near VA except for 40% (100%: <0.050, 20%: <0.010, 10%: <0.010, 5%: <0.010). Between correction methods, there was a greater decrease of far VA corrected by contact lens than by glasses in 10% chart ( <0.010), and there was a greater decrease of near VA corrected by contact lens than by glasses in 5% chart ( <0.050).

Conclusion : This study confirmed that the VA for far and near decreased with lower contrast chart. Wearing glasses resulted in better VA than contact lenses in lower contrast chart. As there is no environment of 100% of contrast in real life, measuring VA with 100% contrast at optical shop might be difference of satisfaction in vision, especially depending on correction method.
